Throw Pillow Sizing Guide

One of the most common questions I get asked is ‘what size pillow cover should I buy?’. One of the best things about pillows is the huge number of options - size, style, fabric, colours... But the number of options can get overwhelming fast, especially when buying online.

Below are a few guidelines that I like to use when choosing pillows to style a space. These are not hard and fast rules - think of this guide as a starting point and add your own unique touch.

Pillow Sizes for Sofas & Sectionals

Start with the largest pillows at the back and layer in smaller pillows. Typically 2" increments work well for combinations (i.e. 22" pillow in front of a 24" pillow or an 18" pillow layered on top of a 20" pillow). Layer in a lumbar pillow to add even more texture and pattern.White sofa with black and white throw pillows

Smaller scale sofas and loveseats (less than 72 inches wide) do well with 18-20" pillows. If you want a more casual, loungey vibe on your full size sofa or sectional, size up to 24".

Sectionals can be a little more tricky. Try a pair of 20"- 22" pillows on each side and add another 20" - 22" pair in the corner with a lumbar.

Pillow Sizing for Chairs

Either a single lumbar or a single 20-22" pillow work well.

Lumbar Pillows

A rule of thumb for sizing lumbar pillows is to measure the width of your chair's seat (inside of the arms if it has them) and subtract 2-4 inches. This is a good width for a lumbar pillow that will fit easily within the chair without looking too big or too small.

12x20" or 12x24" lumbars are always a good choice.

Pillow Sizes for Beds

There are many, many potential combinations depending what look you're going for. Here are a couple of my go-tos.

Two 24-26" square pillows (or three if you have a King) plus a lumbar in front.

I also love using long lumbars, they're a great way to make the bed look pulled together quickly with minimal effort. Try a 14x36" for a Queen or 14x48" for a King.
